GRACE POTTER - 2008

Those of us who grew to the neoteric sounds of psychedelic music of the west coast and the initial wave of women who would lead iconic bands during that epoch of time knew not how fortunate we were. Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Lydia Pense, Tracy Nelson, Annie Sampson & Nancy Nevins were the pioneers of “women who rock” and forty years later, a 25 year old maven who represents the future of the genre with a reverence for the past has finally arrived. Grace Potter exudes the charm of Nancy Nevins, the provocative demeanor of Grace, the mesmerizing vocals of Janis Joplin and the dynamics of Annie Sampson & Lydia augmented with the instrumental and song writing ability of a youthful Tracy Nelson.

There have been others along the way, Ann & Nancy Wilson, The Indigo Girls, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Pat Benatar etc. but none have ever truly captured the spirit of The Golden Age with the panache of Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. In a genre that is in obvious need of a musical Goddess , once ruled by the anointed royalty and standards set by Grace & Janis, the time has arrived for Grace Potter to ascend the hierarchy and rule for the next few decades. Comparisons are trite and perhaps mundane knowing that decades have tainted the art of music with the evils of greed and the “me” syndrome. With that said, it’s refreshing to see a gifted entertainer with a distinct respect for those who came before and an innate ability to envision what could transpire in the future.

Kudos to Harrah’s Casino / The Horseshoe in Southern Indiana for bringing the band to the metropolitan Louisville area. It’s unfortunate that her set was limited to a mere six songs as she needs to open for The Black Crowes like a fish needs a bicycle but her crowning moment awaits on the horizon and a new diva now awaits universal acceptance. Geez, and it only took forty years …who would have known.

Cheers
